A tale of two lorry drivers
There were very different outcomes for two lorry drivers involved in separate RTCs on the southbound M11 this morning.
The ambulance service was called to the motorway between junctions 9 and 8, close to Saffron Walden, at about 9.07am after reports a lorry had overturned and hit the central reservation. A Saffron Walden crew were there in three minutes, but thankfully, the driver was uninjured and did not require hospital treatment.
However, during the tailbacks caused by this incident, a second lorry was involved in a collision, which left the 25-year-old Polish driver with serious injuries. The same crew were dispatched, along with local BASICs doctor Dr Eaton, an operations manager, and the air ambulance.
Aircrew paramedic Richard Mackie said: "The land crew were on scene just before we arrived. The patient had suffered extensive and serious right leg injuries, and a broken right wrist. However, he remained conscious throughout.
"He was administered morphine and oxygen and the doctor assisted with the leg injury to try and make the patient as comfortable as possible. Everything worked well and it was a good team effort.
"We then flew the patient to the Royal London in Whitechapel as they have an excellent trauma team to deal with these kinds of serious injuries."

There is no further information available on the patient.
