An accident which didn't 'spiral' out of control
The ambulance and fire services came to the aid of a Great Baddow woman on Sunday morning after an accident on some stairs at home.
Emergency care practitioner and general manager of primary care Adrian Maasz , plus BASICS doctor Tim Lightfoot, were first on scene to Mascalls Close at about 1am on Saturday. The woman, in her 50s, had taken a fall on a spiral staircase and landed very awkwardly.
Adrian said: "The woman was climbing a spiral wrought-iron staircase when she fell backwards. She broke one of the stanchion posts and actually ended up with her head and neck down the gap in the corner of the stairs.
"I had to wriggle under the very tight space under the stairs, and spent about 45 mins immobilising the patient's spine whilst Dr Lightfoot put the woman to sleep. This had to be done so that she could be flexible enough to be moved safely and quickly; had she only been given pain relief, her body would not have relaxed enough.
"We called the fire service so that they could make the stairs safe as I was holding the woman up on my own. Once we managed to rescue her, she was fully immobilised and taken to Broomfield Hospital for further care."
