Man rescued from disused boiler at Tilbury power station
Ambulance crews have been involved in a lengthy operation to help a man who fell into a vessell and was trapped for more than an hour.
The service was called to the scene at just after 9.30am, and a rapid response vehicle, crew, operations manager Brad Lane, and the air ambulance were dispatched.
Police and fire officers were also on scene, and together the emergency services worked to rescue the 56-year-old man who had fallen about 20ft into the 120ft boiler.
Brad said: "Access to the man was through a small hole about 18x18ins, and so one member of staff had to crawl in to be near the patient. We worked very closely with the fire crews and the power station's own first aid team, who had specialist stretchers to reach the man.
"The patient was conscious throughout, able to talk and was eventually out of the boiler at just before 11am and given a full assessment . He suffered suspected fractures to his arms, and abdominal pain and obviously we queried whether he had internal injuries.
"He was quickly transferred to the waiting helicopter by land ambulance, then flown to Medway Hospital where a trauma team was on standby for his arrival.
"It was very hot and very dirty in there so they were working in difficult circumstances, but the job went very smoothly and full credit to everyone for working well as a team."
