Medic praises support after Benfleet road traffic collision
A medic who was first on the scene to the fatal crash in Benfleet yesterday (Wednesday) has praised those who assisted him in managing the incident and trying to save the life of the motorcyclist.
Barry Howard was 'off-duty' and first on scene at 8.47am, less than 30 seconds after the collision in Bread and Cheese Hill, attending as a member of the public but also as a member of BASICs (British Association for Immediate Care) with advanced immediate care/first aid skills.
Barry said: "I managed the scene for nearly seven minutes providing full resuscitation protocol, latterly with an off-duty nurse. We set up full CPR and rescue breathing procedure and were nine cycles in when the ambulance service arrived - who were excellent - minutes later.
"Also, I organised care for the woman driver who was in shock, put in place road traffic diversions, and blocked off the view from the public. We did a hand over to the paramedics and stood down from that responsibility to then work with the police to establish the mechanism of the event.
"Sadly, the outcome was fatal for the injured motorcyclist, but due to the support I could give and the fantastic work of those on scene, we did what we could to deal with the incident as swiftly as we could, both clinically and practically."
