Serious injuries averted in Basildon flat fire

Only one person had to be taken to hospital following a flat fire in Malyons, Basildon, in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).

The ambulance service was called by the fire service at about 1am. A crew was on scene in seven minutes, backed up by a rapid response vehicle and a second crew.

An ambulance service spokesperson said: "Thanks to the quick-thinking of a young woman in one flat, potentially more serious injuries were averted as neighbours were, with the aid of the emergency services, able to leave their properties unharmed.

"Three people on scene were treated for smoke inhalation, including a 16-year-old girl who was given oxygen and taken to Basildon Hospital suffering breathing problems."
