Hand injuries
Normally the joints of the hand are exercised frequently in the course of everyday activities. If a hand is injured and the joints are not exercised, they soon become stiff and swollen.
To reduce existing, and prevent further, swelling the hand should be raised to shoulder level by folding the arm diagonally across the chest, supported by a sling.
The sling can be removed at night and during any times when the arm can be supported by cushions with the hand raised.
Make sure that all rings have been removed in case the fingers become swollen.
To prevent stiffness of the shoulders while a sling is being used, lift the arm above the head and down to the back several times during the day.
Generally a sling is only necessary for 2-3 days. However, be guided by the clinician if you have seen one, and the extent of the swelling in the hand.
