How it works
Mobilising CFRs.
To find out what happens when a 999 call is made click here.
When an appropriate call is received by ambulance control the CFRs are either telephoned directly (they have a mobile phone for use while they are on duty) or sent a message via SMS text. If available the CFR will notify the ambulance control room that they will be attending the incident and then make their way to the scene (usually in their own car), at all times complying with the highway code and road traffic law.
Many CFRs will attend incidents in pairs but some prefer to work alone. Once the CFR has arrived on scene they will assess the situation and begin managing the patient (reporting back to the control room if necessary). They will continue to care for the patient until the ambulance or rapid response vehicle arrives to take over.

The CFRs have the training and equipment necessary to manage the patient in the first vital minutes following an incident until further professional help arrives. In many cases the CFR may not be required to take any action other than reassure the patient and make sure the ambulance is able to find the incident location. However, we know that CFRs could save a life by simply opening a patient's airway, defibrillating the patient or treating choking.
CFRs will complete an incident report form either during or directly after the incident. This information is gathered and analysed by the Trust to ensure the best possible service is provided to the communities.
