Paramedics
Paramedics often start out as EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians).
After EMTs become qualified, they must work for at least six months before they can begin training to become a paramedic.
Training for paramedics lasts
seven weeks full time or, in some areas, can be completed at a rate of
one day per week over nine months.
The route of entry to become a paramedic for some is via a full-time degree undertaken at university.
Upon completion of their training, by whatever method, paramedics must be registered with the Health Professions Council before they can practice.
Paramedics have the same basic working conditions as EMTs, but they are equipped with additional knowledge such as:
- Advanced life support techniques
- Trauma management
- Paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology
- Advanced fluid and drug therapy
- Anatomy and physiology
